Credits required to complete a European Studies Co-Major:

  • European Studies Co-Major (Option A: Senior Thesis) - 24 hrs
  • European Studies Co-Major (Option B: Non-Thesis) - 27 hrs
  • European Studies Co-Major with Honors - 27 hrs

A. Freshman/Sophomore Preparation

1.  Four semesters of the same Modern Western European Language

2.  Students are required to complete HIST 115 French Revolution to Present: Europe 1790 to Present

3. Students must also complete one of the following courses:

  • ECON 104
  • ECON 140
  • GEOG 100
  • GEOG 102
  • POLS 150/151
  • POLS 170/171
  • HA 100
  • PHIL 180

Note:  Enrollment in the above courses counts toward College principal course distribution requirements in the humanities and social sciences.

B. Requirements for the Major

1. Foreign Language Skills

Students will take one semester beyond the College general education, foreign language requirement (which is the completion of a fourth-semester course) in a modern western European language (Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Polish, Spanish, or Swedish).

2. Foundational Course (3 hours)

All students will enroll in EURS 500: Seminar in European Studies.

3. Upper Division General European Studies courses (9 hours)

Students must take three courses from this list. Two courses must be from different departments.

4. Upper Division National or Regional European Studies courses (6 hours)

Students will enroll in two country- or region-specific courses from this list. These must cover two different countries or regions. Students are encouraged to meet with Advising Specialist Laura Leonard, laleonar@ku.edu or Lorie A. Vanchena, Academic Director, vanchena@ku.edu, each semester to obtain a complete listing of courses.

5. Final Senior Hours (3 to 6 hours)

Option A. EURS 501: Senior Thesis
A semester-long, independent research project under the supervision of a faculty thesis director. Students should contact Dr. Lorie A. Vanchena, Academic Director, vanchena@ku.edu, before registering for EURS 501.

Option B. Two additional upper division European Studies courses These courses can be general European or country-specific electives chosen from the course lists above.

C. Honors (Optional)

            1.  Choose Option A from Final Senior Hours
            2.  Add EURS 502: Honors Thesis
            3.  Co-Major GPA of 3.5 or above
            4.  Cumulative GPA of 3.25 or above

Additional Regulations: Sharing courses between majors

No more than 9 credit hours may be shared between the 24-hour European Studies co-major and another major. No more than 12 credit hours may be shared between a 27-hour European Studies co-major and another major. Students completing three majors may share an additional three-hours between the European Studies co-major and this third major. Courses taken during a study abroad program in Europe may be used to fulfill co-major requirements. Students should consult with an advisor in European Studies about study abroad credit prior to their program departure.

Students should consult with Dr. Lorie A. Vanchena, vanchena@ku.edu, and Advising Specialist Laura Leonard, laleonar@ku.edu, for approval of courses. No more than one course may be counted in both the minor and another degree or minor program.
